Genius Presents: The Month In Lyrics (August 2018)

New releases from Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, Ariana Grande, & Eminem dominated this month.

Every day, millions of music fans come to Genius to find the deeper meaning behind the lyrics of their favorite artists, from rappers to pop singers to country stars. Our Top Songs Chart reflects what the world is listening to all day, every day. In 2018, we’re crunching numbers and compiling the Month in Lyrics on the first of every month to show what music is catching fans' eyes and ears the most.

The data is broken down into the following categories each month: Top Artists, Top Songs, Top Lyrics, and Top Albums.

Go deeper into the data below:

Top Artists

After a relatively quiet July, August saw several big-name artists drop new albums and switch up the Top Artists chart. Travis Scott easily took the No. 1 spot, earning over 8 million pageviews thanks to the release of ASTROWORLD. Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Eminem also put out projects and racked up millions of pageviews in the process, while XXXTENTACION rounded out the Top 5 thanks to continued interest in his catalog in the wake of his murder earlier this year.

Drake’s continued success on the Hot 100 chart has bled over to Genius, too, with the OVO rapper landing at No. 6 this month. Holdovers like Kanye West and 6ix9ine also continue to perform well, while Ohio rapper Trippie Redd reached the Top 10 for the first time thanks to the release of his debut album Life’s A Trip. Further down the chart, new releases from twenty one pilots, BTS, and the late Mac Miller earned each of those artists spots, too.

Top Songs

Nicki Minaj may have lost out on a No. 1 album to Travis Scott in August, but she beat him out for the top spot on Genius' Top Songs chart this month. “Barbie Dreams,” her remake of The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Just Playing (Dreams),” earned the Queens rapper over 1.6 million pageviews thanks to lyrics fantasizing about having sex with a number of high-profile rappers. Travis Scott and Drake were hot on her heels with their hit “SICKO MODE,” while June holdover “In My Feelings” locked down No. 3. Nicki and 6ix9ine’s “FEFE” and Travis' “STARGAZING” finished off the Top 5.

Travis earned the most total entries on the Top Songs chart, with eight songs across the Top 20. Ariana Grande held it down with five entries thanks to the release of her fourth album Sweetener, while Nicki Minaj locked in three. Eminem even managed to land his song “The Ringer” at No. 13 despite it coming out on August 31.

Top Albums

While Top Songs may have gone Nicki Minaj’s way, Genius' Top Albums chart for August tilted decidedly in Travis Scott’s favor. ASTROWORLD averaged nearly 450,000 pageviews per song, far outpacing Ariana Grande’s second-place Sweetener and Nicki’s Queen. Eminem racked up a robust average pageview count, too, despite dropping just one day before the end of the month. Early summer holdovers rounded out most of the Top 10, although Trippie Redd snuck in with Life’s A Trip.

Smaller acts managed to crack the Top 20, too, including buzzing boyband Why Don’t We, shadowy R&B singer H.E.R., Brooklyn MC Flipp Dinero, and Florida mainstay Denzel Curry. The late Mac Miller also landed at No. 14 with his fifth studio album Swimming, buoyed by the single “Self Care.”

Top Lyrics

While other categories contained some big surprises, the Top Lyrics for August 2018 were mostly to be expected. Nicki Minaj’s 50 Cent fantasy on “Barbie Dreams” landed on top, followed by Eminem’s controversial (and self-censored) Tyler, The Creator diss from “Fall.” Fans continue to have love for Kiki from Drake’s “In My Feelings,” while Eminem, Travis Scott, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj dominated the rest of the field. Whether fans were checking out Em’s Migos imitation on “Not Alike” or Kid Cudi’s astral hums on “STOP TRYING TO BE GOD,” big new releases swept the board on Top Lyrics.

Editor’s Note: Songs from THE CARTERS and their album Everything Is Love have been omitted from this list after Genius discovered a user was manipulating their song pages and inflating their numbers. The user has since been banned.
